What Is an EPD?
An EPD is a verified document. It shows how a product affects the environment across its full life — from raw materials to disposal. It follows ISO 14025 and EN 15804. The data comes from a Life Cycle Assessment done under ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. A certified third party checks the results. EPDs are valid for five years. They are published in a public database through a program operator like EPD International.
EPDs are needed for LEED v4.1, Estidama Pearl, Mostadam, GSAS Qatar, and BREEAM projects. If you make construction materials in the GCC, project teams and architects will ask for EPDs.
What Does an EPD Cover That Carbon Footprint Certification Does Not?
An EPD covers many environmental areas. Carbon footprint certification covers only one.

Carbon footprint certification only covers CO₂. An EPD covers all ten areas above. Green building rating systems need the full picture. That is why they require EPDs, not carbon labels.

What Is Carbon Footprint Certification?
Carbon footprint certification measures the CO₂ emissions of a product. The result is shown in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent (kg CO₂e). The main standard is ISO 14067. PAS 2050 is also used. A third-party check is not always required. The certificate is valid for two to three years. You often see carbon labels on consumer products, packaging, and company sustainability reports.
It is faster and cheaper than an EPD. But it does not work for LEED, Estidama, or Mostadam credits.
When Should You Choose Carbon Footprint Certification?
Carbon footprint certification is the right choice when:
- Your buyer only wants CO₂ data — not a full environmental report
- You sell consumer goods, food, or retail products with a carbon label
- You need carbon data for ESG or sustainability reporting
- Your market does not need green building credits

Carbon footprint certification is a useful starting point. But it cannot replace an EPD for construction product tenders in the GCC.
EPD vs Carbon Footprint — Which Does LEED Accept?
LEED v4.1 accepts EPDs for the MR Credit: Building Product Disclosure and Optimization. Carbon footprint certification does not qualify for this credit. To earn one LEED point, a project needs EPDs for 20 products from at least five suppliers. EPDs must follow ISO 14025 and EN 15804. They must be published by an approved program operator such as EPD International, IBU, or NSF.
LEED rewards full material transparency. A carbon label does not meet this standard. It does not cover the full set of impact categories that EN 15804 requires.

EPD vs Carbon Footprint — Which Does Estidama and Mostadam Accept?
Estidama, Mostadam, GSAS, and BREEAM all accept EPDs. None of them give credits for carbon footprint certification. Estidama (Abu Dhabi) uses EPDs to support its Stewarding Materials credits. Mostadam (Saudi Arabia) requires product EPDs at Gold, Platinum, and Net Zero levels. GSAS Qatar and BREEAM also accept EPDs based on ISO 14025 and EN 15804.
Carbon footprint certification does not earn credits in any of these systems.

Is an EPD Worth the Extra Cost?
For GCC manufacturers who bid on construction projects — yes. Carbon footprint certification earns no green building credits. An EPD does.
An insulation maker in Sharjah had carbon footprint labels in early 2024.
